Summer Institute for Authentic Learning and Leadership

Many schools today feel stuck in what could be called the “Meh Era” of schooling: students are present but disengaged, and learning often feels transactional rather than meaningful. In this session, Nikole James explores how school leaders can move beyond compliance-driven systems and intentionally design structures that foster student agency, ownership, and purpose.

Participants will learn practical leadership strategies for embedding student voice into school culture, including student participation in leadership teams, hiring committees, and initiatives like Student-Led Elective Fairs. The session will also highlight how experiences such as student shadow days can help educators better understand learning from the student perspective.

Rather than requiring sweeping reforms, this session focuses on small, strategic shifts leaders can support in classrooms, such as structured choice and simple changes to lesson design that increase student ownership without lowering rigor.

Attendees will leave with actionable ideas for helping their schools move from compliance and disengagement to cultures where curiosity, voice, and meaningful learning thrive.
